Twitter Chat, October 2022 Summary
On Wednesday 26th October 2022, we held our Early Careers Livechat on twitter. We spent some time considering the visible impact of the economic downturn, what we were doing at present and how we were preparing for future hardships for our libraries and patrons.
We were extremely pleased to see so many people participating. The contribution each of you shared helps add to the knowledge of all Library, Information and Knowledge Management Professionals. Only through the exchange of information and ideas can we expand our own knowledge across the sector. Discovering the differences and similarities in the situations we face and how we respond in our various library settings, be they public, academic or research facilities, benefits us all by preparing us for the unknown.
Throughout the discussion participants especially observed increased footfall in branches, queries regarding increased opening hours and questions about the idea of libraries providing a ‘warm space’.
Many reinforced the concept that no matter the type of library in which you operated, staff act in the role as a listening service for some patrons providing support and must have a knowledge for signposting to additional help and assistance.
There was agreement across the board of how critical the library service is for the community it serves - especially in difficult and unsure times as we now face. Despite potential budget cuts, we must do more with less for our patrons.
From our own point of view, many considered that now is always a good time to evaluate what you can do for yourself career wise. Job satisfaction sometimes has to be worked for. Keep Cilip Ireland in mind for what we can provide in the way of support, networking and training to boost your own career path.
All libraries are affected differently but sharing knowledge helps us all.
Thank you to everyone who participated and if you missed it, here's a Wakelet of the chat: https://wakelet.com/wake/aNWtLPgZzQKsO3kt8kVRq
